Art District 798 - 北京798艺术区

Review of

Formerly the Modern Art District, now there are only a few galleries left. It has become mainly a district to admire the industrial architecture of Beijing and enjoy a nice little terrace

Presentation of the 798 art district

The 798 Art District takes its name from the 798 Factory that was built in Beijing during the 1950s. The galleries, installed in the remains of a disused military factory, therefore give off a unique atmosphere. It is located in the northeast of the capital and is a zone of modern Chinese art opened to the public in 2002 when artists from Beijing wanted to exhibit their work in a place that would not cost them much.

The 798 Art District is made up of several dozen small streets, which makes it easy to move from one studio to another or from one gallery to another. It is a bustling place and perfect for strolling and visiting something different and original in Beijing. Maps of the district are available in cafes and galleries, this can help you find your way around and find what interests you the most. There are many sculptures and photos there, but in fact, art is found in all its forms.

The 798 art district aims to be a place where every artist has the opportunity to show and share their ideas, work and thoughts. As a visitor, it is possible to spend a whole day there. In addition, it is not necessarily necessary to be a great art lover to appreciate the 798 art district because modern art is for everyone. Entrance to the 798 art district is free, although it may happen that for certain special exhibitions, an access fee is required. The 798 art district is also accessible by bus and metro. Cars are not allowed in this area so you will have to park outside. Finally, be aware that once night falls, the 798 art district is very poorly lit.
