Litang Plateau

Litang Plateau, located at a height of 4000 meters above sea level, is made up of a vast plain punctuated by nomadic tents and the city backed by the famous Chöde Gompa monastery (Changqing chunke’er in Chinese). The latter, initiated by the third Dalai Lama in 1580, is the main attraction of the city. Its many temples and the few thousand monks who live there demonstrate the long-standing presence of Tibetan Buddhism in the region.A Tibetan guide will take you to meet his people on a horseback trip or a trek to the surrounding mountains through the expanses of grasslands and herds of yaks.The Litang festival brings together many nomadic families and inhabitants of the surrounding villages. There are demonstrations of skill of riders and races as well as various Buddhist ceremonies of prayers, dances and songs. It usually takes place around August 1st.
