Taoping - 桃坪

Pictures of Taoping in Kham Region

Taoping

The Qiang ethnic group resembles in its architecture and way of life its neighbors Jiarong but does not represent less a people with its own customs and language. The black turban worn by some women and the pieces of dried pig hanging everywhere (then fried or boiled) are particularly distinctive of Qiang.Taoping, although seeing an increasing number of tourists arriving, is a remarkable place where huge multi-storey houses overlap and stick together forming a compact, fortress-like ensemble.Roofs and underground irrigation system connect the houses to each other.Three guard towers are still in state and visitable. From their summit we contemplate the complexity of the surrounding architectural ensemble. In the same area, one can also visit the village of Maoxian.
