Caves and rock carvings of Dazu
Located in the Xian of Dazu, 167km west of Chongqing and 271km east of Chengdu, there are more than 50,000 carved stone carving from the year 650 for the first, from the Tang Dynasty to the Ming and Qing dynasties. Spread out over 5 sites, some sculptures are representations of everyday life, others are dedicated above all to Buddhism, but also to Taoism or Confucianism. In addition to the sculptures, there are also many inscriptions on everyday life and religious beliefs.
Beishan
Started in the Tang Dynasty, the Beishan site includes nearly 10,000 stone sculptures on a cliff 300m long and 7m high. These rock carvings are primarily dedicated to Buddhism.BaodingshanStarted under the Song Dynasty, it is a set of 13 groups of stone carving. One can notably discover a Buddhist statue with a thousand arms or the reclining Buddha.
Nanshan
It is mainly rock carvings dedicated to Taoism that we find here. Very colorful, these sculptures were made during the Song Dynasty.
Shizhuanshan
Sculpture set made at the end of the 12th century, mixing Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.
Shimenshan
Combination of Buddhist and Taoist statues, the first of which were made in the 12th century.Many sculptures express Buddhist and Confucian doctrines. In 1999, the stone carvings of Dazu are classified World Heritage by UNESCO.
