Chongqing Drone Show

The Chongqing drone show has become one of China’s must‑see night experiences, staged above the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, right in the heart of the city near major landmarks such as Chaotianmen, Hongya Cave and the Grand Theatre. It’s a highly visual urban experience, perfect to combine with an evening stroll along the riverside, night photography and a spicy Chongqing hotpot.

Charming Chongqing show overview

Every Saturday night, several hundred to over a thousand drones light up the sky above the two rivers, drawing the skyline, Chongqing symbols and animated light scenes for around 15 to 20 minutes. The show takes place where the Yangtze and Jialing meet, with the Raffles City towers, Chaotianmen and the developed riverbanks as a backdrop, creating a futuristic, almost cyberpunk city atmosphere.
The show is free, visible from different banks, and is often extended on major Chinese holidays (Chinese New Year, National Day, Mid‑Autumn Festival) with additional performances. Are you just looking for a quick glimpse from the promenade, or would you rather plan a full evening with dinner, a river cruise and night shots?

Times and frequency (to be checked before you go)

    • Regular schedule: every Saturday night, all year round (with extra dates on major Chinese public holidays).
    • Approximate start time:
      • May to September: around 9:00 pm.
      • October to April: around 8:30 pm.
    • Duration: about 15–20 minutes (a short city‑lights sequence, then the main show).

Times can change (weather, special events), so it’s best to ask your guide or check locally (for example via official “Chongqing Release” accounts on WeChat).

Best viewing spots

Here are the most interesting spots, each with its own advantages.

    • Chaotianmen Square
      • Large open space by the water, easy to reach from Raffles City and the Jiefangbei area.
      • Convenient if your hotel is in the centre and you’re returning on foot or by metro.
    • Changjiahui / Danzishi viewing platform – South bank (Nanbin Road)
      • Elevated platform with a frontal view of the confluence and the drones, highly recommended for photography.
      • Access by metro, then a few minutes’ walk through the mall to the viewing deck.
    • Chongqing Grand Theatre & Jiangbeizui
      • North bank, facing Raffles City and Hongya Cave, offering a more panoramic overall view and often slightly fewer crowds.
    • Nanbin Road (Nanbinlu)
      • Long promenade along the south bank with several squares and viewpoints, very popular with locals filming the show and skyline.
    • Hongya Cave and the opposite riverbank
      • Lets you combine the drone show with Hongya Cave’s illuminated facades, one of Chongqing’s most famous night spots.

Wherever you choose, aim to arrive 30–60 minutes early to secure a good spot, especially on weekends and during Chinese holidays.

Best season and how to fit it into your trip

The show runs all year, but the experience is more pleasant in the milder seasons (spring and autumn), when evenings are less humid and the riverfront is more comfortable.
In summer, skies are often clear but it can be hot and sticky, with larger crowds during school and national holidays.

Chongqing fits nicely into an itinerary that includes Chengdu, a Yangtze River cruise or central China: enjoying the drone show after a day of sightseeing (Jiefangbei, Hongya Cave, river cable car, hotpot) gives your evenings a real signature touch.

Getting there and practical tips

    • General access
      • Chongqing is well connected to the rest of China by frequent domestic flights and high‑speed trains.
      • From a central‑city hotel, metro or taxi is enough to reach Chaotianmen, Nanbin Road or the Grand Theatre areas.
    • Practical advice
      • Allow some flexibility: the show can be cancelled or delayed in case of rain, wind or heavy fog.
      • Bring a power bank and a cloth for your camera lens (humidity is common).
      • If you don’t like crowds, favour quieter banks (towards Jiangbeizui or less busy stretches of Nanbin Road).

Are you more in the mood for a lively evening in the middle of the locals, or for a calmer vantage point to enjoy the show from a distance? That will help you choose your bank and what time to arrive.
