Pingyao is a beautiful city in north China’s Shanxi Province just under 800 kilometers west of Beijing. It is one of the few cities in China to have kept intact the remains and traditions of its history. To visit an authentic China, go to Pingyao.A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, the Pingyao authorities have carefully preserved all the buildings dating from the Ming and Qing dynasties, that is, more than 2,000 years ago. Going for a walk on the ramparts, you will pass by some of the 72 watchtowers built in honor of the 72 sages that once surrounded Confucius. Inside, you will discover the mansions of the emperors of the old dynasties and in particular the residence of Lei Lutai. The old bank of Rishengchang is one of the most beautiful examples of architecture in the city.Nevertheless, Pingyao is not just about historic buildings. The city is also a renowned Taoist center with several majestic temples. The most important is Qingxuguan, but those of Shuanglin, the gods of the city and Confucius, are full of statues and other handmade sculptures.To go around in Pingyao, nothing better than cycling.
