Datong Overview
Datong is one of the main cities of Shanxi Province, a few hundred kilometers west of Beijing. There are just over a million inhabitants. It is a little out of the way in China and because of this, tourists are less numerous than elsewhere. It is not less charming than the others and the historical and spiritual attractions are not lacking.
In China, Datong City is known to be one of the first coal producing cities. It is also in full industrial development. Old buildings are being destroyed or under construction for much more modern buildings. However, a city over 2400 years old can only keep its finest treasures. The relics of Yungang Caves and Hanging Monastery are symbols of the different cultures that have dominated the region over time. For a lively evening, head to the Red Flag Square. Natives are still unaccustomed to seeing Western tourists and you will always be a special center of interest; especially with the street artists who according to their mood will integrate you to their show. There are many pagodas, temples and Buddha statues around Datong. Do not miss Yingxian Pagoda, the oldest wooden pagoda in China, the Hanging Monastery, about sixty kilometers from Datong, and the temples of Mount Wutaishan. Thanks to its economic status, the means of transportation to Datong are very well developed. The roads connecting Datong to major Chinese cities are very well maintained and therefore easily passable. The train traffic is also very good. To visit the city, buses will transport you near the main sites of interest. The taxi is another alternative although it is more expensive.Spring and autumn are the two favorite seasons for visiting Datong and the Shanxi region. The temperatures are quite pleasant, between 15 and 20°C. Summer is certainly warmer but also much rainier. The winters are very cold.
