Fanjingshan
Fanjingshan: Sacred Mountain & Natural Treasure of Guizhou
A stunning UNESCO World Heritage site of wild nature and spirituality
Fanjingshan (Mount Fanjing) rises as the highest peak of the Wuling Mountains (2,493 m), in Guizhou province near Tongren, about 2 hours from Fenghuang. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2018, this secluded reserve remains little-visited by Western travelers and appeals to nature lovers and spiritual seekers with its spectacular karst scenery, virgin forests, and rare endemic wildlife—including the endangered golden monkey.
The mountain holds great significance in Chinese Buddhism. Two iconic temples, the Buddha Temple and Maitreya Temple, stand atop the dramatic Red Cloud Golden Summit, separated by a deep gorge crossed by a stone bridge. Pilgrims and visitors reach the summit by cable car and a hike, rewarded with breathtaking views, rolling seas of clouds, sunrises, and the rare “Buddha halo” optical phenomenon. The Mushroom Rock is another famous landmark for photography enthusiasts.
