Hubei Provincial Museum
A Cultural Treasure in Wuhan
A Landmark by East Lake
Located at 160 Donghu Road, in Wuchang District, the Hubei Provincial Museum (湖北省博物馆) stands beside the scenic East Lake (Donghu), one of Wuhan’s most pleasant cultural areas. As one of China’s eight key national museums, it holds a first-class national ranking and is recognized as a 5A national tourist attraction.
Wuhan’s subtropical monsoon climate offers distinct seasons, making the museum visit enjoyable year-round — from mild, blooming spring days to bright, crisp autumn afternoons.
A Museum Rooted in History
The museum traces its origins to 1949, when the Hubei People’s Science Museum was reorganized after the liberation of Wuhan. Officially established in 1963, it merged with the provincial heritage administration to form today’s institution. A new building, inaugurated in 2021, reflects Wuhan’s growing cultural influence.
The architectural layout includes two main halls and two symmetrical wings, built along a central axis. The South Hall houses four exhibition floors, a basement storage area, and a bell chime performance hall (Bianzhong Hall) featuring ancient instruments once used in royal ceremonies.
A Collection of National Masterpieces
The museum preserves over 240,000 cultural relics, including 36,000 precious items and nearly 1,000 first-grade national treasures. Its main strengths lie in bronze ware, lacquered wood, bamboo slips, and jade from the Chu, Qin, and Han dynasties.
Highlights include:
-
- The Sword of Goujian, a perfectly preserved bronze blade over 2,000 years old,
- The Chime Bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng, a world-famous musical relic,
- The Qin bamboo slips from Yunmeng Shuihudi,
- The Yuan dynasty “Four Lovers” meiping vase.
Permanent Exhibitions and Awards
Visitors can explore six thematic galleries, such as:
-
- Eight Centuries of the State of Chu,

The museum has received numerous awards, including the National Excellence Exhibition Award (2021), emphasizing its scientific and cultural leadership in China.
