Yellow Crane Tower in Wuhan

A Legendary Landmark Overlooking the Yangtze

Standing proudly on the western slope of Snake Mountain (She Shan) in Wuchang District, the Yellow Crane Tower (Huang He Lou) is one of Wuhan’s most iconic historical sites. From its summit, visitors enjoy a sweeping view over the Yangtze River, the Wuhan Yangtze Bridge, and the three districts that shape the city’s unique skyline.

Facing Tortoise Mountain (Gui Shan) across the river, the tower forms the poetic geographical ensemble known as “The Tortoise and the Snake Locking the Great River.”

A Monument of History and Poetry

First built in 223 AD during the Three Kingdoms period, the tower was originally commissioned by Sun Quan as a military outpost. The current structure, inspired by the Tongzhi Tower of the Qing dynasty, combines traditional wooden aesthetics with modern reinforced concrete for strength and durability.

Rising 51.4 meters high with five golden roofs, the tower’s design evokes a yellow crane about to soar — a powerful symbol in Chinese culture. Legends and poems by famous poets such as Cui HaoLi Bai, and Bai Juyi have enshrined the site as a pillar of Chinese literature. Cui Hao’s celebrated verse — “The old friends have flown away on the yellow crane; only the tower remains…” — made the monument immortal.
