Shangdu 上都
Presentation of Shangdu in Inner Mongolia
Founded in the past by Kublai Khan, grandson of Genghis, who came here to rest in the summer, this city, located some 200 km north of Beijing and almost 800 years old, was once the political, economic, military and cultural center of northern China. The grandeur of its palaces, its no fewer than 160 temples and its imperial city have not been spared by time. The imperial city was destroyed in 1369. As proof, the few remains still present on the site, which today consists of a large meadow dotted with traces of the past… It is by walking around the site that one is truly able to understand the history and legends behind this site, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012.
