As the world’s first museum of Tibetan medicine, these extremely comprehensive exhibitions make it a rewarding visit for anyone interested in Tibetan culture.It has a large collection of Thangkas (sacred paintings on cloth) used especially for the teaching of medicine in monasteries. You will see there the progress and the knowledge acquired by the monks several centuries before our scientists in the west. The various instruments and ingredients (minerals, plants, animals) used in the preparation of remedies are also exposed.The centerpiece of the museum is the “Great Thangka” which along its 618 meters has no equal in the world. Thirty-seven years were needed for 400 schoolchildren and artists to represent Buddhism as a whole: its deities, symbols, history and doctrine. This work alone deserves a visit to Xining!
