The Reclining Buddha site - Wat Pho

Anyue Reclining Buddha (安岳卧佛)

Located not far from the town of Anyue in Sichuan province, the site of the Reclining Buddha (卧佛, Wòfó) is one of the most impressive sculptures in the region and a little-known treasure of Chinese Buddhist heritage.

A masterpiece of the Song dynasty

The Reclining Buddha of Anyue is carved into a cliff, in a semi-open area surrounded by green hills. This monumental work, created during the Song dynasty (960-1279), depicts Buddha at the moment of Nirvana, the symbolic scene when Siddhartha Gautama leaves the cycle of reincarnations to attain ultimate enlightenment.

At 23 metres long, the Buddha lies on his right side, his head resting on a stone cushion decorated with floral motifs. Despite erosion and the passage of centuries, the serene features of the face and the delicate folds of the robe are still clearly visible, testifying to remarkable technical mastery.

A site steeped in spirituality

Surrounding the main sculpture are several small niches containing secondary statues, such as bodhisattvas, disciples and celestial guardians, which frame the scene of parinirvana. These elements lend the whole a sacred atmosphere and invite contemplation.

The Reclining Buddha is protected by a semi-sheltered structure built to protect it from the elements, but the whole remains in harmony with the surrounding nature.

Unique evidence of Sichuan rock art

This site is one of the largest examples of a reclining Buddha carved in rock in south-west China. Compared with other famous reclining Buddhas in China, the Anyue Buddha stands out for its artistic finesse and gentle expression.

The work also illustrates the transitional style of the Song dynasty, characterised by cleaner lines and a more intimate spirituality than the monumental, imposing sculptures of the Tang dynasty.
