The desert landscape around Tongren reaches its peak in Kanbula National Park, where fiery red mountains meet the turquoise waters of a reservoir created by the damming of the Yellow River. A road winds through the peaks of the park, past Tibetan villages and colourful prayer flags fluttering in the wind. For a fantastic perspective of the park and its magnificent greens, purples, sapphires and blues of the mountains, waters and sky above Kanbula, climb the long wooden steps to the top of the ridge at the end of the stairs. The views from here will simply take your breath away. The park is 90km from Tongren and 130km from Xining, so it’s a perfect stopover en route.
