Weather and climate in Hong Kong
Hong Kong has a subtropical, oceanic climate. Average temperatures are around 23°C. Cyclones of varying severity occasionally hit Hong Kong. If the risk of a typhoon is forecast, it’s best to stay indoors. There are four distinct seasons: a warm and humid spring, a hot and humid summer, a sunny and pleasant autumn, and finally, a cold and dry winter.
Spring in Hong Kong:
The weather in Hong Kong between March and mid-May tends to be hot and humid, with fog and light drizzle. Flights and ferry traffic are sometimes disrupted due to poor visibility. Temperatures range from 18 to 25°C, but nights can be a bit chilly. Therefore, you’ll want to bring warm clothes and rain gear.
Summer in Hong Kong:
From late May to mid-September, Hong Kong is extremely hot and humid. Temperatures regularly reach 30°C, especially in July and August, the two hottest months of the year. This climate is ideal for having fun at the city’s water parks, including Ocean Park. We recommend taking precautions before heading out. Keep an eye on the weather forecast to avoid getting caught in a downpour!
Autumn in Hong Kong:
Autumn in Hong Kong is mild, dry, and sunny. From late September to late November, it’s pleasant to stroll along the bay or take a trip to Lamma or Lantau Islands. At this time of year, you’ll only need daytime clothes and a light jacket for after dark.
Winter in Hong Kong:
Dry and cool, winter in Hong Kong generally begins in December and ends in February. Temperatures drop to around 17°C. Note, however, that if the north wind blows, they can drop to around 10°C. The weather is then ideal for shopping in the city’s major shopping malls. It’s also often a sales period, so pack warm clothes.
