From a climatic perspective, Tibet is undoubtedly one of the most challenging places for any traveler. It’s mild in summer and sometimes freezing in winter. However, the weather remains difficult to predict, and temperatures can vary from one extreme to another. The sun’s rays are also very strong. On some days, the brightness becomes almost blinding. The little wind that blows at this altitude doesn’t absorb the heat. Therefore, it can be very hot both day and night in Tibet.
Spring in Lhasa and Tibet:
From April to June, the landscapes of Tibet are magnificent. The valleys turn green and flowers begin to bloom. Although the weather is rather mild, temperatures are still a bit chilly at this time of year in Lhasa.
Summer in Lhasa and Tibet:
Thanks to a more favorable climate in summer, most adventurers, especially the growing number of Chinese, prefer this season to travel to Tibet. Summer is therefore the peak season for traveling to Tibet. From time to time, temperatures exceed 30°C. July and August are the hottest, sunniest, and liveliest months in the Lhasa region, but the weather can be very unpredictable, with heavy and abundant rains.
Autumn in Lhasa and Tibet:
The vastness of the landscapes takes on another dimension in autumn, especially in the south. The colors are simply sublime. The sky is clear, there are very few clouds, and showers are rarer. Contrary to popular belief, the climate is not a problem in September and October if you plan your trip to Tibet during this time.
Winter in Lhasa and Tibet:
Winter is definitely the season to avoid when traveling to Tibet. The climate can quickly become atrocious, with temperatures dropping below -15°C. In northern Tibet, winter lasts from October to June, while in the eastern part of the region, roads and passes are often blocked by snow or landslides. A winter trip to Tibet should focus solely on exploring Lhasa and its surrounding areas, located at an altitude of less than 4,000m; the roads there are in good condition.
