Weather and climate in Macau
Located west of the Pearl River estuary, Macau experiences four distinct seasons. Annual temperatures hover around 20°C, with about 100 days a year when they exceed 30°C. The 30 days when temperatures drop below 10°C contrast with Macau’s relatively mild weather. Between land and sea, Macau’s climate is influenced by both the ocean and the mainland.
Spring in Macau:
Spring in Macau is relatively short: from March to April. Winds from southeast China bring some warmth but also a touch of humidity. Despite occasional showers and a light mist, the weather is good. The days are sunny and the nights are mild. Travelers should therefore bring some rain gear and transitional clothing.
Summer in Macau:
Summer sets in at the beginning of May and lasts until the end of September. It can be difficult to bear this climate because the extreme rise in temperatures leads to numerous thunderstorms, even cyclones and typhoons between June and September. It is also advisable to stay indoors during these times. On the other hand, when it is not raining, the weather is perfect for making the most of the sea and the beach. T-shirts and shorts will be enough to dress, but you will also need to think about rain gear. On the other hand, the heat is humid, and therefore a little more difficult to bear than in Europe, the air conditioning in stores and restaurants, which is running at full blast, is then beneficial for a “cool break.”
Autumn in Macau:
After this harsh summer, the intense southwest winds are giving way to northerly winds. They bring a breath of fresh air. Macau is a good place to travel between October and December. This is undoubtedly the season when the weather is most pleasant for sightseeing. In the evening, travelers will appreciate a sweater or light jacket, but during the day, they can go out much more casually.
Winter in Macau:
January and February are the coldest months of the year in Macau. Temperatures gradually drop as Siberian air blows across the peninsula. During this time, visitors will need wool sweaters and thick coats to stay warm.
