Weather and climate in Sichuan
The Sichuan Basin has a subtropical climate with a dry spring, a short, hot summer, a rainy autumn, and a long, not-so-cold winter. Average annual temperatures fluctuate between 15 and 19°C, and even during the coldest months, they rarely drop below 10°C (at least in the Chengdu region and the south, which are at lower altitudes than in the north or west of the province). The difference between day and night, however, is quite significant. Humidity, fog, clouds, and a lack of light are the main characteristics of Sichuan’s weather. It is estimated that there are between 250 and 300 rainy days per year. As the region is a mixture of plains and plateaus, the weather varies considerably depending on the location.
Spring in Sichuan:
Spring temperatures in Sichuan range from 10 to 21°C, but regular downpours can hamper your stay. Note, however, that the eastern part of the province is more affected by the monsoon than the western part, and the basin is wetter than the plateaus.
Summer in Sichuan:
Summer is, climatically speaking, the most enjoyable season for tourism in Sichuan. The days are long and the views of the valley are truly beautiful. Temperatures are above 22°C daily, although the weather is always rainy.
Autumn in Sichuan:
The autumn landscapes are truly worth the detour, as the autumn climate lends intense colors to the sky and trees. This is particularly true of Jiuzhaigou National Park, which is stormed by Chinese tourists in early October every year. Temperatures in Sichuan are still mild, while they begin to get cooler in the mountains. Until October, you’ll have to put up with the frequent showers.
Winter in Sichuan:
The winter weather isn’t always easy in Sichuan Province, but winter sports enthusiasts will be delighted to go skiing in the mountains. The western Tibetan region of Sichuan, the Kham region, is significantly colder than the rest of the province. In fact, there’s hardly any summer in this part of the province.
