Weather and Climate in Xi’an
In Shaanxi Province, the climate in Xi’an is similar to that of Europe, with four distinct seasons: a warm spring with somewhat unpredictable weather, a hot and humid summer, a rainy autumn, and a dry but rather cold winter. Annual temperatures generally hover around 13°C. We recommend visiting Xi’an between March and May, as this is the most pleasant time of year. It is also possible to enjoy your stay in Xi’an in early autumn, when the weather remains mild, in September or October.
Spring in Xi’an:
Spring temperatures in Xi’an vary greatly. In March, they range from 8°C to 14°C, while in April and May, they can reach 20°C. Sweaters and coats are therefore essential at the beginning of the season, but long sleeves and light jackets will suffice as the days progress. As summer approaches, it will even be possible to wear summer clothes. The sun and the gentle breeze allow you to enjoy outdoor activities in Xi’an without any problems.
Summer in Xi’an:
In this region of China, summer is both hot and humid. Xi’an is one of the cities in the country that suffers the most from this heat. This furnace is oppressive, but the rainy and stormy days nevertheless create a certain balance. Given the inconveniences associated with this climate, it would be wiser to plan rather indoor activities for a trip during this period; for example, visiting Huashan Mountain could be problematic in summer in case of heavy rain.
Autumn in Xi’an:
The weather is very rainy in autumn and the sky is often cloudy. Temperatures can be a little cool depending on the day. You’ll need to pack transitional clothing and a light waterproof jacket to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
Winter in Xi’an:
Winter lasts from November to February. It can snow occasionally, and temperatures are generally quite low. The coldest month of the year is January, with an average temperature of 0°C. It’s therefore important to dress accordingly.
