When to travel to Kham Country?
Kham Country consists of vast plateaus stretching from northern Yunnan to southern Qinghai and Gansu, across western and northwestern Sichuan. The climate of the high plateaus becomes increasingly cold and dry as the altitude increases. Conversely, the valleys bordering them are more humid and temperate. Cold streams descend from the plateaus in winter, and warm, humid streams rise from the plains in summer.
To visit the intermediate valleys between the plains and the plateaus (Kangding, Danba, Hailuogou among others), it is better to favor spring when the snowmelt and the vegetation offer a superb spectacle and as long as the rains are not too heavy. Autumn is also suitable.
If you’re heading to the Tibetan plateaus in the west, avoid winter, which can be very harsh and snow sometimes blocks the roads. Mild, sunny summers (beware of sunstroke and dehydration!) are the best time to visit and hike through mountains and high-altitude meadows. However, the snow-capped peaks are less white, and some rivers have reduced flow.
