Here is a circuit that will satisfy all the curious! Whether you choose to walk, pedal or climb, you will be captivated by the charm of this landscape. And this whatever the time of the year! In this program several options can be proposed according to your desires.
Daily program: Yangshuo Karst Landscapes and Longji Rice Terraces (5 days)
Day 1: Arrival in Guilin
Flight or fast train to Guilin. Welcome by your driver then transfer (without guide) to your hotel in the center of Guilin, the Mansion 1940 Boutique Hotel or in a higher range at the Guilin Tea Aroma Hotel, a small structure with charming rooms, close to the pond and the city center, (+ 350RMB/room, or 46EUR/room).
Or optional with the visit of Guilin: Transfer with private vehicle and driver, in addition to your French-speaking guide, to Mount Yao. Yao Mountain, which peaks at 909 meters, is the highest mountain in Guilin. The summit is accessible by chairlift. Then continue to the Guilin tea research center with more than 250 species of tea. Discovery of the city center then transfer to your hotel in the city center (supplement based on 2 participants: + 420RMB/pers; based on 4 participants: + 250RMB/pers; based on 6 participants: +220RMB/pers).
Or optional without the night in Guilin by going directly to Ping’an (total 4 days): Arrival at the train station or airport then identical continuation to day 2 below. Discount based on 2 participants: – 500RMB/pers; based on 4 participants: – 400RMB/pers; based on 6 participants: -350RMB/pers).
Day 2: Guilin – Ping’an (B) ~ 2h00 drive. Altitude: 900m
Welcome by your driver and your guide then departure towards the region of the rice terraces of Longsheng or Longji (the dragon’s backbone), north of Guilin, gathered in particular around the Zhuang village of Ping’an and Dazhai.
Arrival below the village of Ping’an, which you will reach with local shuttles then on foot after 30 minutes of walking (porters available). Installation at your wooden inn. In the afternoon take a short hike to the top of the rice fields of the dragon’s backbone.
Superb panoramic view! Perhaps you will be lucky enough to meet the Yao women, famous for their beautiful embroidered pink costumes, their heavy jewelry and their long hair sometimes touching the ground! Accommodation at your wooden inn, the Ridge inn 3 * (good comfort with air conditioning and room with a view of the rice fields).
Day 3: Ping’an – Dazhai – Yangshuo (PDJ) ~ 3 hours drive.
This morning, take a short hike to the old village of Longi, then after lunch, find your vehicle and head to the Sugar Loaf region south of Guilin.
For the rest, two options are available (same price):
Option 1: Cuiping
Continue in the afternoon to Cuiping Hill to watch the sunset at one of the most popular viewpoints for photographers, and still little visited (20 minutes of climbing on foot). Then transfer to Yangshuo and your hotel.
Option 2: Moon Cave and Hill
Visit the Silver Cave with its superb rock formations (the cave is equipped and lit, and accessible to young children), then the Moon Hill, a large pierced mountain, a natural emblem of Yangshuo (observation from below or possible ascent on foot with steps that will take you to the foot of the arch. 40min walk to the top).
(Note: The Silver Cave is beautiful but very popular with Chinese tourists; there are often crowds inside).
Same continuation:
Continue to the town of Yangshuo, always very lively. Check in to your hotel.
In the evening, watch a traditional fishing demonstration with tamed cormorants.
Accommodation at the Riverside Retreat located a little away from the city on a hill and featuring a small swimming pool and a magnificent view of the karst peaks (or optionally at the River Lodge located on the banks of the Li River away from the city – more comfortable rooms: supplement of 26EUR/room/night or in a superior charming category (see box below).
Day 4: Yangshuo - Xianggong - Xingping – Yangshuo (PDJ) ~ 1h00 + 0h40 drive.
After breakfast, departure by vehicle to the superb viewpoint of Xianggong. Climb to the top of the panoramic point for a view of the hills and the Li River site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Find the vehicle that will drop you off 5km further at the start of a path that you will take on foot through citrus orchards and small hamlets to the village of Xingping (1h30 to 2h00 of hiking). The path offers a beautiful view of the river. You will also visit a small temple nestled on the banks at the entrance to the Snail Cave where a few monks still live. Cross the river with the local ferry and discover the old street of Xingping where you can have lunch (at your own expense).
In the afternoon, take a short raft ride on one of the most beautiful sections of the Li River between Xingping and the 9 Horses Hill, through small fishing villages, rice fields and bamboo groves (approximately 45 minutes of cruising). It is a landscape of this section that inspired the illustration of the Chinese 20RMB note.
Return to the village of Xingping (optional for the more athletic, watch the sunset from Laozhai Hill: see Laozhai video, free entry; 30 to 40 minutes of steep climb) then drive to Yangshuo and return to your hotel.
In the evening, possibility of attending the sound and light show “Liu San Jie”, based on a very popular Chinese musical, staged by the Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou. It takes place on the Li River in a beautiful natural setting surrounded by karst mountains (not included in the quote: 300RMB/person comfort seat B2 including transfers).
Overnight in Yangshuo.
Day 5: Yangshuo – Yulong River (B) ~ 1h20 drive
After breakfast, bike ride (or electric scooter with supplement of +50RMB/scooter, including for the guide) to the Wild Cave perched, away from the tourist circuits. The climb is done in a crack of the mountain on steps cut into the rock. Superb view from one side of the cave to the other. Continue the bike ride along the Yulong River, through sleepy hamlets, rice fields and fish ponds to the village of Jiuxian (Yulong River seen from the sky).
Lunch in a beautiful inn set up in an old house in the village (at your expense).
Return to Yangshuo after lunch where it will be possible to make an extension to the Dragon Bridge or to make a loop in a real bamboo raft, without motor, propelled by a gondolier on the very bucolic Yulong River – Supplement for the raft to be paid on site.
Return to Yangshuo. Transfer to the airport or to Guilin train station.
