Presentation of Gulangyu Island
Located off Xiamen in Fujian Province, just 5 minutes away by ferry, Gulangyu Island is a pretty little island with a colonial past. Passed under European control by the Nanking Treaty in 1842, there are many buildings of colonial inspiration where some countries established their consulate.
On this island of about 1km², cars and motorized vehicles are prohibited. Walking on foot or aboard small electric cars.
A stopover day on this island with colonial charm and sandy beaches, allows you to spend a relaxing time after visiting the province of Fujian and Hakkas country. Gulangyu Island is also one of the most beautiful scenic spots in Fujian.
To enjoy the calm of the island, do not hesitate to stroll through the narrow streets lined with magnificent houses.
What to see on Gulangyu Island?
The peak of the sun
We reach the Sun Peak by the monastery of the Lotus Flower. This is the highest point of the island, located in the easternmost part. Its name comes from the rays that illuminate its granite and rocks in the early morning. You can climb to the top to enjoy an overview of Xiamen and Gulangyu but also the islands of Dadan and Xiaodan.
Built in 1931 on the south side of the island, Shuzhuang Garden was once a private villa. It became a park open to the public in 1955. Located on the south shore of the island, the garden offers magnificent views of the sea. Pavilions and bridges appear in the middle of nowhere, in the heart of a forest tropical.
The piano museum
Located in the heart of Shuzhuang Garden, this small museum houses more than 200 pianos. The only one in China dedicated to this instrument. Most coming from abroad, old and very rare.
