Introduction to the Dujiangyan Giant Panda Protection and Research Center
There are 3 giant panda protection and research centers: Wolong, Ya’an Bifengxia and Dujiangyan. Wolong and Ya’an Bifengxia centers are responsible for feeding, breeding, research and release training. Opened in 2013, Dujiangyan center is responsible for the care and disease control of giant pandas.
Also known as the Panda Paradise, the Dujiangyan Chinese Giant Panda Conservation and Research Base is located in Shiqiao Village, Dujiangyan City, and consists of a large park with a large bamboo forest and hiking trails open to visitors.
The Dujiangyan base is the last part of the protection network. Here you can be in contact with the pandas, and volunteers who want to take care of the pandas and feed them are always welcome. The volunteers’ job is to clean the pandas’ cages, prepare food and feed them. Many of our Sichuan tours include this unique experience!
The center covers an area of more than 12,000 square meters and is divided into 6 parts:
The quarantine and conservation of giant pandas part.
The prevention and control of diseases of giant pandas part.
The study of giant pandas part.
The reception and education of the public part.
The natural vegetation part.
The logistics part.
There are also 4 gardens in the areas open to the public and in which you can discover around twenty pandas:
The Panpan garden
Shuangnan Garden
The Linze garden
The Diequan garden
Panda “Panpan” is one of the most famous pandas both in China and abroad. He spent 6 months in the United States as a representative of the China Wildlife Conservation Association. Entrance to the Dujiangyan center: 58 RMB per person.
Spend a day as a volunteer at the Dujiangyan Panda Center
The Dujiangyan center allows you to live a unique experience, up close with the giant pandas. During the program, you will be asked to work with the keepers and researchers of the center to take care of some pandas.
Here is the program of a typical day:
8:30-9:00: Registration, presentation of the day and safety training
9:00-10:00: Your volunteer work can begin: cleaning the enclosures, preparing food, visiting the center
11:00: It is time to feed the pandas. Each volunteer can feed a panda by giving it an average of 3 cakes. Only the keeper will be able to feed him apples and carrots. You can ask to have your photo taken with a panda, for an additional fee. You can touch him gently, but do not make sudden movements, as this may startle him.
12:00-13:00: Lunch at the Dujiangyan Panda Valley canteen.
13:00: Watch the movie “Pandas 3D: The Journey Home, National Geography” – duration 35 minutes.
14:00: You will practice the same tasks as in the morning: cleaning the enclosures and feeding the pandas.
15:00: On your marks, bake! You will make cakes for the giant pandas.
16:00: The panda keeper program ends. You will receive your certificate!
Cost for this volunteer day: 900 RMB per person (including the entrance ticket to the site).
