Introduction to Dujiangyan
The Dujiangyan Irrigation System
Built over 2,300 years ago, the Dujiangyan Irrigation System prevented the Min River from flooding and irrigated the surrounding area. It is one of the oldest irrigation systems still in working order and today, the system continues to serve local agriculture. During the rainy season, the water is stored and used during the dry season in summer.
There are 3 major parts to this irrigation system. The first part is called Yuzui (fish mouth) and was built in the middle of the river to control the amount of water that flows into the two channels. The second part is an irrigation channel that regulates the amount of water that enters the irrigation system and is called Baopingkou (precious bottle inlet). The mountain had to be drilled to pass this channel. The third part is a spillway called Feishayan and built to discharge water and silt.
Access: 80 RMB per person.
