Presentation of the Four Treasures of the Qinling Mountains Park
The Four Treasures of the Qinling Mountains Park is located in Shaanxi Province, more precisely west of Louguantai (the Taoist temple we mentioned earlier), in the Zhouzhi District of Xi’an. It is approximately 70 km southwest of Xi’an.
It is important to note that there are also records of these animals in other nature reserves in the Qinling Mountains, such as the Changqing or Taibaishan Nature Reserve, but the “Park of the Four Treasures” is specifically dedicated to the presentation and conservation of these four key species.
These four animals are considered flagship species and symbols of the unique fauna of this region:
- Qinling Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca qinlingensis): This is a subspecies of giant panda, characterized by darker fur and a smaller skull than the Sichuan giant panda. It is one of the rarest and most famous animals in the world, and the Qinling Mountains are home to a significant population.
- The Takin (Budorcas taxicolor): This large, goat-antelope-like bovid is a hardy and rare animal that lives in dense forests and rocky mountain areas.
- The Golden Monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana): Known for its golden fur and snub nose, this spectacular primate lives in complex social groups in mountain forests.
- The Crested Ibis (Nipponia nippon): This majestic bird, once critically endangered, has been saved through intensive conservation efforts, particularly in the Qinling Mountains. It is recognizable by its white plumage and red crest.
