Beijing Opera - 京劇

Introduction to Beijing Opera

Beijing Opera is a symbol of traditional Chinese culture. An art that has been perfected over the centuries throughout China and which reaches us today in the Peking style. The simplicity of the stage with few sets contrasts with the bright colors of the costumes, the fascinating makeup and masks, and above all the talent of the actors leaves us speechless. Beijing Opera combines sung opera, dances and acrobatics, not to mention all the symbolic gestures, the mimes so particular to this art. The actors are all great athletes, their theatrical performances require hours of daily exercise and most likely a life dedicated to opera. In the past, this profession required a very demanding 7-year training starting in childhood. The Cultural Revolution suppressed traditional opera and favored revolutionary opera. It is only in the last ten years that we have been able to easily rediscover this art in the capital.

Liyuan Theatre: A new premier venue

Since the pandemic, the traditional performance location has shifted to the Liyuan Theatre, located inside the Jianguo Hotel Qianmen, in the historic Qianmen district southwest of Tian’anmen. This prestigious theater, inaugurated in 1999 within the renovated historic hotel, welcomes visitors in a hall that can seat around 1,000 people, featuring decor reminiscent of old Beijing Opera theaters with calligraphy, masks, and Chinese folding screens.

Why Watch a Performance at the Liyuan Theatre?

Situated in a historically rich neighborhood, the Liyuan Theatre offers an authentic cultural immersion into the soul of Beijing Opera in a comfortable, modern setting while remaining true to ancient traditions. The theatre serves as a bridge between imperial history and contemporary visitors, providing an experience tailored to foreign tourists through translations and explanatory guides.
